Counterfeit Avoidance Test Lab Services
Nasco Enhances XRF Analysis Capability
Thursday, December 08, 2011 | BUSINESS WIRE
Nasco offers RoHS testing services for restricted substances on all electronic components and aerospace hardware. Frank Bagnasco, President of Nasco added the Oxford Instruments X-Strata 980 to its list of equipment used to not only verify the authenticity of the parts it sells but also offer affordable testing services to companies needing RoHS compliance verification.
Originally used to verify RoHS compliance, XRF analysis is now a useful tool in determining the authenticity of electronic components.
Did you know that with the implementation of the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive electronic component manufacturers maintain data that list the elemental composition of their products? Using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) equipment to compare the elemental breakdown of the part being analyzed to the manufacturer's specifications or a known good device is another vital tool in the combat against counterfeit components!
The X-Strata 980 is unique in that not only does it perform elemental composition analysis; it is capable of measuring the plating thickness of components. This is useful in a number of applications:
- Military and Aerospace hardware: Analyzes the plating material and thickness and compare these results to the specification
- RoHS to Sn/Pb (tin/lead) conversion: Tests the plating thickness of parts that have been converted using hot solder dip to replace the finish on electronic components per the GEIA-STD-0006 standard.
NASCO XRF ANALYSIS OVERVIEW
- Electronic components
- RoHS compliance verification
- Material composition comparison to manufacturer's specification
- Material composition comparison to "Golden Standard"
- Plating thickness and material composition after RoHS to Sn/Pb (tin/lead) conversion
- Military and Aerospace Hardware
- Material composition and plating thickness comparison to the manufacture's specification/drawing
- Detailed report included

NASCO DISTRIBUTOR SALES CONTINUES TO IMPROVE ITS COUNTERFEIT DETECTION AND TESTING SERVICES
St.Petersburg, FL - July 15th, 2011
In its continued effort to combat the counterfeit electronic component epidemic Nasco Distributor Sales, a leader in the distribution of electronic components and counterfeit avoidance has become an Alliance Partner with National Instruments. With the addition of the NI Elvis II+ and the NI Multisism Full Development System, Nasco Distributor Sales now has the capability of performing JTAG testing. Incorporated into its comprehensive 4 Tier Counterfeit Avoidance Inspection Process, JTAG testing allows for more complex devices such as FPGAs, CPLDs and DSPs to be verified using the JTAG IEEE Std 1149.1 communications interface.
As one of the first distributors to develop a counterfeit avoidance plan; Nasco utilizes the Nisene JetEtch II de-capsulation machine to expose the die for comparison to a known good device. This is critical in determining whether a part may be counterfeit. The de-capsulation is only one step in the 4 Tier Counterfeit Avoidance Inspection Process. Upon receipt of the product it first goes through a complete visual inspection under high magnification where the part is examined for any evidence that the part has been altered (remarked) or used. The part is also compared to the datasheet and a "Gold Standard" part. Nasco began its CCAP-101 registration in 2008 and was certified in 2009. A comparison to a known good device (Gold Standard) is performed on the part using the ABI SENTRY counterfeit IC detector. For programmable parts, the DATAMAN-48 PRO+ is used to check if the part has been previously programmed as well as checking the ID of the device. Other equipment, such as oscilloscopes, LSR/ESR bench testers, curve tracers and other equipment is used for test, depending on the part itself as well as the level of testing required by the customer. Records of inspection and testing are stored electronically and a component analysis report is furnished to our valued customer at no cost for all product sold by Nasco.
Nasco Distributor Sales has been in business for over 10 years. We have been ISO 9120:2000 certified since 2005. Our in house test laboratory is ISO 17025:2005 and will be applying for AS6171 certification as soon as it is available. We are members of GIDEP, ERAI and SMTA.

NASCO Distributor Sales Announces Its Gold Sponsorship at the DMSMS 2011 Conference
St.Petersburg, FL July 13th, 2011
Nasco Distributor Sales is proud to announce its "Gold Sponsorship", participation and exhibition at the Diminishing Manufacturing Sources and Material Shortages (DMSMS) at the Westin Diplomat Hotel in Hollywood, Florida on August 29th through September 1st, 2011.
With the challenges of obsolescence, counterfeiting, parts management, shorter life cycles and lead-free conversion the availability of electronic components has become a major concern for OEMs. The results of this challenge have lead to OEMs to source supply from independent distributors. This in turn has lead to issues concerning the authenticity and reliability of components purchased through these non-franchised/non-factory authorized sources.
With its comprehensive counterfeit mitigation plan Nasco Distributor Sales has become a leader in the supply of authenticate components to the electronics industry. Vetting suppliers is only the first step Nasco Distributor Sales takes in its effort to avoid counterfeit components entering the supply chain. With its comprehensive 4 Tier Counterfeit Avoidance Inspection Process, Nasco Distributor Sales has continued to improve its ability to protect its valued customers from the risk of counterfeit/substandard product entering their inventory. All parts supplied by Nasco Distributor Sales go through this thorough inspection process at no cost to the customer.
LIFE CYCLE MANAGEMENT
Technology advances have lead to shorter life cycles for integrated circuits (time from development to end of life) creating obsolescence issues for manufactures of legacy hardware devices. The military market is a prime example of this. Over 80 percent of the weapons systems in use today were designed in the 70s and 80s when IC technology revolutionized system performance by shrinking size and increasing functionality. Costs involved with the redesigning or creating new systems cannot be justified while the older systems designs are more than acceptable. Nasco Distributor Sales offers its valued customers the option of "Bonded Stock", whereas they will procure the components for the customer and allocate the product for future shipment to the customer. Agreements can be put in place as to the terms and conditions needed to satisfy both Nasco Distributor Sales as well as the customer.
